Urgent Statement by the Russian Human Rights Commissioner T.Moskalkova

Urgent Statement by the Russian Human Rights Commissioner T.Moskalkova

On 26 March 2018, the Ukrainian border guards seized Crimean fishing boat «Nord» with a crew of 10 Russian citizens on the Azov high seas.

I happen to know that the passports of the Russian citizens were taken away from the crewmembers; they are pressured to admit being Ukrainian citizens.

Moreover, there are great difficulties in providing the crewmembers with potable water, food and medicine. The Russian Consul is denied access to the sailors.

I consider this paradoxical situation as blatant violation of basic norms of international law and urge you to intervene and induce the Ukrainian authorities to ensure the inherent right to nationality of the Russian citizens and allow the Russian Consul to visit them.

Tatiana Moskalkova

High Commissioner for Human Rights
in the Russian Federation
