UNHCR: amount of material assistance to refugees to be doubled by 2020

On 31 October, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that the amount of cash payments to assist refugees will have been doubled by 2020. According to UNHCR, the measures taken will enable refugees to lead more decent life.

"The allocation of sums of money to refugees became a crucial moment in the provision of assistance to these population categories. We decided to use this practice worldwide, to extend it as far as possible to all our campaigns, "- said UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi.

"We have already seen the effectiveness of this method that contributes the improvement of living conditions of refugees and internally displaced persons", - said High Commissioner.

Filippo Grandi said that the increased use of cash would allow refugees and other categories of displaced persons to individually manage their family budget. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is one of the first agencies of the organization, which since the mid 80's uses the practice of providing financial assistance to the refugees.

Actually UNHCR provides money in 60 countries. In 2017 this project will cover 15 additional countries, including Nigeria, Afghanistan, Kenya, Somalia, Uganda, Ethiopia and Iran.
