On February 25, High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova appealed to President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer, Greek Ombudsman Andreas Pottakis, the Minister of Health and the Minister of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights of Greece to protect the rights of Alexander Vinnik.
The Russian ombudswoman asked the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter to facilitate the medical examination of Alexander Vinnik.
"Medically, Mr. Vinnik is in critical condition: very thin, pale yellow, psychologically stressed, with slow reaction, lost about 30% of his weight. It is obvious, that he is to the brink of death and extremely needs medical care," the address reads.
"As I know, Mr. Vinnik has to continue hunger strike due to the lack of doctors, who are able to recover him after hunger strike without causing harm to his health," the High Commissioner informed the Minister of Health of Greece.
"It is essential to facilitate the independent health examination of Mr. Vinnik by independent doctors who will save his life," as stated in the letter to the Greek Ombudsman.
In addition, Tatiana Moskalkova asked the Minister of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights of Greece to extradite Alexander Vinnik to the Russian Federation for further investigation of his case.
On February 21, during a working visit to Greece, the High Commissioner visited Alexander Vinnik in hospital «ΤΖΑΝΕΙΟ». After the conversation with the High Commissioner, Alexander Vinnik has decided to suspend the hunger strike. However, Alexander Vinnik has to continue hunger strike due to the lack of doctors who can provide the necessary medical care.
