Special Representative of the President on Environmental Protection considers it necessary to increase accountability for environmental damage

Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation on Environmental Protection, Ecology and Transport Sergey Ivanov participated in the V International Conference “Human rights protection in Eurasia: exchange of best practices of ombudspersons”. Sergey Ivanov, commenting on precedents of inadequate fines and low accountability for breaches of environmental legislation, expressed his opinion that in cases when there is proof of serious environmental harm, there should be much larger fines for the perpetrator. “The fines for environmental damage should be adequate enough so that the owner of the business [that causes harm to the environment] understands that environmental regulations are not to be underestimated and that non-compliance will lead to very serious consequences”.
