High Commissioner’s visit to Kiev

On July 15, High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova arrived in Kiev to support head of the RIA Novosti — Ukraine news agency Kirill Vyshinsky at the court hearing.

Today, the Podolsky district court of Kiev is to consider the case of a Russian journalist accused of treason. More than a year has passed since the day of the illegal arrest of the editor-in-chief of RIA Novosti Ukraine news agency. On the eve of detention, the news portal objectively covered the celebration of Victory Day in Ukraine. The journalist was charged with treason. He faces a punishment of up to 15 years in prison. Kirill himself does not recognize his guilt and emphasizes that he is persecuted for his professional activity.

The High Commissioner repeatedly appealed to the Ukraine authorities to change the measure of restraint to the journalist, objectively consider the case and dismiss the charge of treason against the prisoner of conscience.

During the visit to Kiev, the Russian Commissioner is to meet with Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova. Tatiana Moskalkova is to discuss with the Ukrainian counterpart protection of Russian citizens in Ukraine, and Ukrainians in Russia, as well as continuing the dialogue between human rights institutions of the two countries.
