High Commissioner representative participated in International Conference of National Human Rights Institutions in Morocco

On October 10, the representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation participated in the 13th International Conference of National Human Rights Institutions "Expanding the civic space and promoting and protecting human rights defenders, with a specific focus on women: The role of national human rights institutions". The conference co-hosted by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions and the National Human Rights Council of Morocco in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is held in Marrakech, Morocco from 10 to 12 October 2018.

The representative of the Russian ombudswoman shared the High Commissioner’s experience, described interaction between the Russian ombudswoman and human rights defenders and their collaborative work to protect citizens’ rights. She also spoke about  positive changes in the Russian legislation on non-profit organizations acting as foreign agents.

"Provision of financial, property, information support and consultancy for human rights non-profit organizations is one of the important areas of state policy of the Russian Federation," she noted.

The conference is marking the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 25th anniversary of the endorsement of the Paris Principles and the establishment of the international network of NHRIs, the 20th anniversary of the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders.
