Foreign ombudspersons shared their views on the Russian elections at the Central Election Commission of Russia

On September 18, High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova and foreign ombudspersons participated in meeting of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation "Protection of the Electoral Rights of Citizens: International Aspect".

The Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Kazakhstan Elvira Azimova emphasized the openness of the Russian Commissioner’s institution for interaction with public observers.

"This openness is very important for the people, because it ensures the implementation of the constitutional principle on the participation of citizens in government," said Elvira Azimova.

Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia Arman Tatoyan noted the unique experience of observing the elections directly from the Human Rights House and the professional work of the Russian Commissioner’s office.

Ombudsman of the Institute of Ombudsmen for Human Rights of Bosnia and Herzegovina Jasminka Dzumhur spoke about the significant role of information technologies used in the current election campaign: "Thanks to video surveillance, the process of processing complaints is accelerated, because the violation can be traced through cameras," Jasminka Dzumhur said.

Ombudsmen of foreign states, at the invitation of the Commissioner, visited Russia to take part in monitoring the observance of the electoral rights of people during the elections on September 17–19. On September 17, the House of Human Rights hosted a round table "Ensuring electoral rights of citizens: exchange of best practices of ombudspersons", where foreign colleagues exchanged human rights experience, discussed new mechanisms for protecting citizens' rights in the electoral process.
