Comment by High Commissioner on Release of Russian Sailors

Comment by High Commissioner on Release of Russian Sailors

I am happy that our sailors Aleksey Perfilyev, Valentin Nechai and Vyacheslav Sechin, kidnapped in May from two vessels the “Jibloo” and “Rio Mitong” off the coast of Equatorial Guinea, have gained freedom.

This release was the result of the actions of the diplomats of the Russian Embassy in Abuja, the Nigerian authorities, a shipowner company and the work of the human rights institution of the Russian Federation.

For many months, we have been doing everything possible to free our citizens. I turned to Substantive Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria Anthony Ojukwu with a request to assist in the return of our sailors to their homeland, with the same request I turned to United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet. Today our sailors are free! This is another example demonstrating how interaction with the ombudsmen of other states and international human rights institutions can achieve an outstanding result with the help of human rights diplomacy.

I congratulated Irina Perfilieva and in her person all the wives, relatives and friends of our sailors on this happy event.

And I wish our sailors health and a speedy return to their homeland to all who have been waiting for them all these long months!

High Commissioner for Human Rights
in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova
