Special meeting of human rights defenders of Saint Petersburg

On 11 December, within the framework of the city events dedicated to Human Rights Day, a special meeting of prominent local non-government organisations took place in the White Hall of the Mayakovsky Central Public Library in Saint Petersburg. The event was initiated by Commissioner for Human Rights in Saint Petersburg Alexander Shishlov.

Members of the Saint Petersburg Human Rights Defenders Council, the Human Rights Committee of Saint Petersburg, the Civic Chamber of Saint Petersburg, representatives of non-government organisations ‘Centre for Independent Social Research’,’Citizens Watch’, ‘Nochlezhka’, ‘Soldiers’ Mothers of Saint Petersburg’ and others took part in the meeting.

The participants discussed how the right to assembly, the right to vote, social and economical rights are being currently implemented in the city; they also talked through the specifics of NGOs’ functioning under the law on «foreign agents», latest legal precedent decisions in this direction, and ways to involve the general public into the work of NGOs.
