NAA Commissioner reported on observance of rights of persons with disabilities

On September 18, Commissioner for Human Rights in the Nenets Autonomous Area Larisa Sviridova participated in the round table on «The issues of disabled people socialization in the Nenets Autonomous Area» organized by the Commission on Health, Social Policy, Support for Persons with Disabilities of the Public Chamber of the region.
According to the regional Commissioner, every seventh inhabitant of the NAA is a disabled person.
«Within the framework of the round table, I asked once again that the relevant authorities pay attention to the problem related to the passage of sanatorium and resort treatment in connection with changes in federal legislation," Larisa Sviridova said.
«We also examined in detail the implementation stages of the regional program „Affordable Environment in the Nenets Autonomous Area for 2017–2020“». My proposal is to adapt those buildings in which social institutions are located today for the disabled people to access them. The region has special vehicles, and instead of expensive repairs it is possible to purchase special wheelchairs for each institution in which citizens of this special category can move around the institution. It is necessary to maintain ramps and buttons to call employees to the street," the ombudsman added.
In conclusion, the regional Commissioner paid special attention to the need to change the attitude of society towards people with disabilities. «We must understand that these are people with special needs, but not with limited opportunities," Larisa Sviridova said.
