Electoral rights of citizens with disabilities discussed in Nizhny Novgorod Region

On October 12, Commissioner for Human Rights in the Nizhny Novgorod Region Nadezhda Otdelkina spoke about collaboration with the Regional Electoral Commission and the Ministry of Internal Regional and Municipal Policy of the Nizhny Novgorod Region to create conditions for the accessibility of polling stations for low-mobility citizens.

During the September election campaign, the regional Commissioner and her public assistants took an active part in monitoring the implementation of electoral rights of citizens with disabilities and visited the majority of polling stations in the most problematic districts of the city and the region.

Nadezhda Otdelkina noted that the availability of polling stations is important not only for wheelchair users, but also for people with poor eyesight, hearing, limited mobility, especially for elderly voters.

«The electoral activity and, in general, the confidence in the state authorities depend on whether our polling stations are accessible and comfortable for these citizens," the Commissioner said. In addition, she proposed to engage public control mechanisms in this work, to involve NGOs and the Public Chamber of the region in monitoring.
