On 5 February, Commissioner for Human Rights in Novosibirsk Region Nina Shalabaeva visited Correctional Facility No. 9 of the Novosibirsk Region Department of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia.

The purpose of her visit was to personally see a prisoner who has submitted a request to the Commissioner. As a result of the visit, the prisoner received explanations regarding all her questions.

In addition, the regional Commissioner together with the Prosecutor of the Novosibirsk Prosecutor’s Office for Supervision of Observance of Laws in Penitentiaries, Alexander Ryabykh, also inspected the premises of a unit with strict conditions of detention. During the inspection some observations on the conditions of detention of prisoners and arrangement of the premises were made to the attention of the facility's administration.

At the working meeting following the inspection the administration officials have committed to remedy all the revealed violations.
