Tatiana Moskalkova met with representatives of human rights organizations
On 6 June, High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova held a working meeting with representatives of human rights organizations. Human rights activists shared with the High Commissioner their views on the current human rights situation in Russia: every participant in the discussion told about problems they have to face in their activities, proposed solutions to some of these problems and requested for the High Commissioner's assistance.
The representatives of public human rights organizations are concerned about the issues of minors’ rights observance, including orphans, and also the problems of domestic violence. Many problems appear in the field of migrants’ rights observance, while stateless people are especially unprotected. The problem of repatriation of former Soviet citizens to their homeland has a serious aspect: according to the human rights activists, the laws in this field are not perfect.
The law on foreign agents caused an intense discussion: according to the participants in the working meeting, a new version of the law will not provide a solution to the problems that the public organizations receiving funds from foreign sources and spending them on charity, educational and other
According to the participants in the meeting, the problems faced by independent public observers during elections and representatives of independent medical expert organizations also deserve High Commissioner’s attention. Besides, the issues of convicts’ rights observance, especial female prisoners: rights to medical aid, proper conditions of detention, maternity, need additional attention.
In addition to the general analysis of the situation the human rights organizations’ asked the High Commissioner to get acquainted with particular cases of human rights violation.
Tatiana Moskalkova listened to the human rights activists carefully and noted that the information received needed to be comprehended and seriously analysed. She expressed her hope that some problems touched upon at the meeting would be addressed in close cooperation with human rights organizations. "I want to make life better and find a possibility to help people," the High Commissioner underlined to conclude the meeting.
