Statement by High Commissioner on renewal of a membership of the Russian Federation in the UN Human Rights Council

Statement by High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova on the renewal of a membership of the Russian Federation in the UN Human Rights Council

I welcomed the news of the election of the Russian Federation as a member of the UN Human Rights Council by the delegates of the UN General Assembly on October 13, 2020. The Russian Federation will become a member of the Council for a three-year period, starting from January 1, 2021.

The UN Human Rights Council is an important international body which responsibilities include promoting and protecting human rights around the world, responding to cases of human rights violations and making recommendations for their restoration. The work of the UN Human Rights Council reflects the desire of the states of the world to come to universal ideals of honor and dignity. It becomes possible thanks to unique human rights instruments and acquires special relevance at a time when the whole world seeks to harmonize approaches to the protection and support of human rights.

I am convinced that the contribution of the Russian Federation to the activities of the UN Human Rights Council will increase the effectiveness of the practice of international human rights diplomacy.
