Meeting with representatives of International Commission of Jurists
On 21 May, Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia Ella Pamfilova met with representatives of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ).
In particular, ICJ Secretary General Wilder Tayler, Director of the Europe Regional Programme Róisín Pillay, ICJ-Noway President Vidar Strømme, Legal Adviser in the European Programme Temur Shakirov, as well as advocates Alejandro Salinas and Stine Langlete took part in the meeting.
In the course of the meeting the participants discussed reforms in the Bar and the community of legal professionals in Russia. A particular interest was paid to the Ministry of Justice’s draft document on introduction of so-called “attorney’s monopoly”, according to which only a lawyer in the status of an attorney would be able to represent a client in court.
Representatives of the federal commissioner underlined importance of improvement of legal services’ quality and self-regulation of the legal community in Russia.
