Meeting of Eurasian Ombudsman Alliance

09 November 2018
Meeting of Eurasian Ombudsman Alliance

On November 9, a meeting of the Eurasian Ombudsman Alliance (EOA) was held in Moscow under the chairmanship of High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova.

Opening the event, Tatiana Moskalkova emphasized the significance of interaction between the participants of the Alliance and noted the positive experience for the year.

"In one year of EOA work we had a lot of different situations when we faced the need to protect human rights. A group of Kyrgyz citizens working in a clothing factory was not paid any salary, and we restored their rights. We also faced the situations of illegal deportation," the Russian ombudswoman said.

The participants of the Alliance also discussed the draft agenda to 2019.

"So my proposals are the following: first, to jointly visit penitentiary facilities; second, to organize a round table on protection of foreign citizens’ rights in other states. Also, I propose to jointly visit detention centers for foreign nationals who are to be deported," Tatiana Moskalkova stated.

The National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia represented by Chief Commissioner Byambadorj Jamsran became the fifth member of the EOA.

The members of the Alliance also signed Protocol to the Memorandum On the Observer status to the Eurasian Ombudsman Alliance.

At the end of the meeting, ombudspersons discussed the EOA statute, establishment of the interim secretariat and chairmanship, as well as the future website of the Alliance.

The EOA was established on 5 December, 2017 in Moscow. It is the first human rights union in history that unites the efforts of state human rights defenders of Europe and Asia.
