Issues of legal education discussed at meeting of the Expert Council’s section under the High Commissioner

On September 21, a regular meeting of the section on education and legal education in the field of human rights and freedoms of a citizen of the Expert Council under the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation was held.

Legal education is one of the main activities of the High Commissioner, within which Tatiana Moskalkova speaks on television, collaborates with leading Russian universities, participates in conferences, voicing her position on topical issues of human rights protection.

In the year of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Federal Constitutional Law "On the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation", the federal Ombudsman Tatiana Moskalkova is initiating a Single Lesson for pupils on the eve of December 10, International Human Rights Day.

It is expected that all schools of the Russian Federation will organize and conduct lessons on the discipline "Human Rights", as well as extra-curricular educational activities recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

The main goal of the event is to explain to children the idea of what human rights are, how they can be implemented and protected, how the institution of the ombudsman in Russia emerged in accessible language.

The idea of the Single Lesson is also aimed at the implementation of Presidential Decree No. 761 of June 1, 2012 "On the National Strategy of Action for Children for 2012–2017", according to which it is necessary to promote the legal education of children and their knowledge in the rights field.

During the lessons, competitions and webinars, students will get acquainted with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Declaration of Human Rights, the Constitution of the Russian Federation and other human rights documents.

The initiative to hold a Single Lesson was supported by Commissioners for human rights in 85 constituent entities of the Russian Federation and the Interim Commission of the Federation Council for the Development of the Information Society.

Members of the Expert Council discussed the methods to make this enlightening project as interesting as possible for schoolchildren of any age. According to the general opinion of the participants of the meeting, the Festival of Law will allow each child to get acquainted with the basics of jurisprudence and personally communicate with well-known human rights activists.

Among the priority areas of joint work, representatives of the academic and expert community highlighted the inclusion of the discipline 'Human Rights" in the work programs of higher education institutions.
