High Commissioner’s Office and the Council of Europe discussed joint projects

On October 25, the meeting was held between Acting Manager of the Affairs of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Ivan Solovyov and Director General of the Directorate of Human Rights and the Rule of Law of the Council of Europe Cristos Yakumopolos.The event was also attended by representatives of the Council of Europe, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and employees of the Office of the High Commissioner.

In his welcoming speech Ivan Solovyov stressed the importance of the interaction of the Office of the High Commissioner with the structures of the Council of Europe.

"Last week, the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland discussed the broader human rights agenda for more than two hours, including current joint projects and new vectors of interaction in the field of protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens," said Acting Manager of the High Commissioner’s Affairs.

In turn, Cristos Yakumopolos also noted the effectiveness of the dialogue.

"The Council of Europe also attaches great importance to your work and the activities of your Office. The fact that we often communicate with you, is positive. I look forward to continuing our cooperation", said the representative of the Council of Europe.

During the meeting, Ivan Solovyov and Cristos Yakumopulos discussed promising areas for the development of joint projects within the framework of the Russia-Council of Europe cooperation program.

In particular, the parties agreed to carry out activities aimed at protecting the rights of disabled people within the framework of the joint program "HELP" in 2018. "To date, there are 13 million people with disabilities live in Russia. Accessible environment, medicines, medical services are those important issues that deserve special attention", emphasized Ivan Solovyov.
