High Commissioner met with Governor of Arkhangelsk Region

On November 8, High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova held a meeting with Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region Igor Orlov.

The High Commissioner and the head of the region discussed topical issues related to ensuring human rights, as well as the positive experience of human rights activities in the Arkhangelsk Region. In particular, Tatiana Moskalkova noted that the region’s activity in such a difficult area as adaptation in the society after returning from places of detention deserves special attention.

"It is very important to give people the opportunity to return to normal life and, at the same time, to protect society from repeated offences. In this respect, the experience of the Arkhangelsk Region on the re-socialization of people who have served their sentences is very important. I would like to consider this experience in order to give recommendations to other regions," Tatiana Moskalkova said.

The High Commissioner also stressed the work of the regional public organizations. As an example, Tatiana Moskalkova mentioned the activities of the «Hope» center, where women can get asylum in the event of an acute conflict in their family.

Tatiana Moskalkova arrived in Arkhangelsk to participate in the work of the interregional forum «Arctic — a special level of human rights», dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the institution of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Arkhangelsk Region.

According to Igor Orlov, the forum is a landmark event that will allow us to look at the Arctic from a fundamentally different point of view: not only as a region rich in resources, but also as a territory where due to the nature of the environment it is necessary to pay special attention to human rights in all aspects of life.
