Greetings of High Commissioner on Universal Children’s Day

Dear friends, I congratulate you on the Universal Children’s Day!

On this day in 1959, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and in 1989 — the Convention on the Rights of the Child. These two events have become an important milestone in the history of human rights activities aimed at ensuring the well-being of children all over the world.

Just over a month ago, thanks to unprecedented efforts, we managed to save the children from the horrors of the war in Mosul. Earlier, as an ombudsperson, I sent appeals to international organizations asking them to support a position condemning cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment against Russian women and children detained by the Iraqi authorities during the operation to liberate the city of Mosul from terrorists.

It is very difficult to understand the fact that children can be deprived of the right to life in the 21st century. Our task is to make sure that every child is safe, educated, and lives a happy life in a loving family.

Let our children have as long childhood as possible and be carefree, cheerful, and joyful. I want to wish all the children health, happiness and a peaceful sky over their heads.
