Examine legitimacy of detention and deportation of Russian journalist from Ukraine

02 July 2015

On 2 July, High Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia Ella Pamfilova submitted an official letter to her Ukrainian counterpart Valeriya Lutkovska. The letter concerned deportation of Russian journalist Aleksandra Cherepnina from Ukraine.

The official letter of appeal to Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner Valeriya Lutkovska underlines that the process of detention provokes a lot of questions. The lack of a court judgement recognising the journalist’s activity as "anti-Ukrainian and destructive" puts the existence of legal grounds for her deportation in doubt, says the letter.

In this regard, High Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia requests Valeriya Lutkovska to render her assistance and examine legitimacy of Channel One Russia’s journalist Aleksandra Cherepnina’s detention and deportation from Ukraine.

On 1 June, journalist for Channel One Russia Aleksandra Cherepnina stopped contacting the editor’s office at around noon time. Later, Ms Cherepnina called the editor and said she was incriminated with falsification of one of her videos and deported to Moscow.
