Again on Privalov’s historic apartment buildings

23 January 2015

On 23 January, Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Ella Pamfilova sent official petitions to Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yury Chayka and Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin to "inspect implementation of the laws on protection of cultural heritage" during the initiated demolition of the Privalov’s apartment buildings.

"Everything should be done to preserve the historic identity of Moscow’s urban environment," Ms Pamfilova underscored.

On 19 January, the Commissioner has already appealed to Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky with a request to assist in preserving the architectural complex.

Earlier the state historic and cultural expert committee concluded that the said buildings should be included in the registry of cultural heritage of federal importance. The relevant duly prepared documents are under consideration of the Ministry of Culture of Russia. In spite of this, demolition of the Privalov’s Group of Apartment Buildings constructed by Architect Ernest Richard Nirzee started on 16 January.
