On February 21, High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova visited Russian citizen Alexander Vinnik arrested in Greece at the request of the US Justice Department in 2017.
Alexander Vinnik has been on a hunger strike against the violation of his right to a fair trial and against the illegal detention in violation of the Greek Constitution since November 26, 2018.
After the conversation with the High Commissioner, Alexander Vinnik has decided to suspend the hunger strike. According to Tatiana Moskalkova, the Russian citizen needs professional medical assistance, since suspending hunger strike is no less dangerous than hunger strike itself. The federal ombudswoman is to provide all possible medical and legal assistance to a Russian citizen.
"I will appeal to the Ministry of Justice, personally to the Minister of Justice, Minister of Health, so that a decision on his extradition to Russia is taken. And there are legal and moral grounds for that. Firstly, it is a Russian citizen, secondly, a criminal case against this citizen has been initiated and investigated in Russia. It is impossible to complete the investigation and make a fair trial if the citizen is located in the territory of another state," the High Commissioner said.
