To: Dr. Andreas Pottakis
The Greek Ombudsman
Dear Dr. Pottakis,
I am kindly writing to you concerning the plight of Mr. Alexander Vinnik, the Russian national arrested in Greece in 2017.
Mr. Vinnik has been held in Greek penitentiary facilities for more than thirty months which seriously calls into question the implementation by the competent authorities of the Greek Republic the European Convention on Human Rights provisions guaranteeing the right to a fair trial within a reasonable time.
According to the media, Alexander Vinnik is currently on a hunger strike for 28 days; his right to a daily walk is violated. It is reported that the prison authorities have had problems in relation to Mr. Vinnik’s right to the legal assistance. It is also known that Mr. Vinnik’s wife is seriously ill. Under these circumstances, Mr. Vinnik’s psychological and physical condition seems critical.
I should therefore like to ask you to provide Mr. Vinnik with all possible legal and medical assistance within your mandate.
Looking forward to further fruitful cooperation in the sphere of the protection of human rights,
High Commissioner for Human Rights
in the Russian Federation
