Statement of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation

09 June 2019
Statement of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation

I have noted with attention the recent statement made by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland with regard to the situation of investigative journalist Ivan Golunov who had been detained by law-enforcement officers in Moscow.

From day one I took this case under my special control and stayed in close touch with the lawyer of the detained journalist.

It is known that Moscow’s Nikulinsky District Court has ordered correspondent Ivan Golunov to remain under house arrest.

I am pleased to state that quick reaction of the Russian authorities, including the comment made by Mr. Anton Kobyakov, advisor to the President of the Russian Federation, who promised to ensure careful and due supervision of the case, vividly demonstrates close attention paid by the State to opinion and concerns of the Russian public.
