Hunger strike of political prisoner in Kharkov

12 March 2015

Activist of the ‘Anti-Maidan’ protest in Kharkov Spartak Golovachev arrested on 30 April last year in relation to the occupation of the regional administration building has been on hunger strike for more than two weeks. The detainee’s wife says neither Ukrainian authorities nor the prosecutor’s office or local mass media pay any attention to the political prisoner.

"My husband has no wish to eat or drink anything but water. So, now his health has seriously worsened: he has heartache, rapid pulse and bad blood tests," Victoria Golovacheva said.

In the meantime, Spartak, who was allowed to meet a priest on 4 March, confessed he was ready to die to draw public attention to the violations.

The next court hearing is to be held on 17 March. Ms Golovacheva is sure that in case her husband fails to be exchanged urgently, he will die before the hearing.

For reference: Spartak Golovachev was detained by the Kharkov Region General Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine on suspicion of organisation of mass riots in Kharkov. Hearings on the occupation of the regional administration building are being constantly postponed and the detained has his detention extended. Mr Golovachev himself assured that he arrived at the place when the building had already been occupied by the protesters to organise negotiations between activists of the ‘Anti-Maidan’ and the officials. Beside Spartak Golovachev a lot of other political prisoners are is custody currently in Kharkov.
