France: Roads, oil depots and refineries remain under trade unions blockade

France is preparing to host two million visitors at the showpiece Euro 2016 football tournament in two weeks, and the back-drop is not ideal: strikes and feared fuel shortages, potential transport paralysis, a state of emergency and a mood of heightened tension and violence between street protesters and police.

The CGT union is leading the action. "Continue and step up the actions," eight unions said in a joint call after the day of action.

According to the international mass media, the dispute over labour reforms has led to blockades in French towns, cities, on motorways and bridges, as well as disruption of the nation’s rail and air travel.
