Commentary by the High Commissioner on the response of the American side on the application for clemency of Konstantin Yaroshenko

High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova commented on the response of the American side to a letter regarding the application for clemency of Konstantin Yaroshenko.

Last May I asked President of the United States Donald Trump to show goodwill and generosity and pardon citizen of the Russian Federation Konstantin Yaroshenko, sentenced in Manhattan federal court to 20 years in prison and serving the sentence in the Fort Dix Correctional Institution in New Jersey from September 2011.

In my letter, considering the humanitarian side of the issue, I asked the president to release Konstantin Yaroshenko from further serving his sentence, pointing to the length of his imprisonment and the progressive deterioration of his health.

In a reply received from US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell sent to me on behalf of the US President Donald Trump on March 8, 2018, it was stated that «the legal verdict was entirely based on the evidence presented» and assurances were given that «the US authorities timely provide the Russian citizen with the necessary medical care».

Unfortunately, the US report on the legality of the verdict is not a response to the application for clemency of the Russian citizen whose health is rapidly deteriorating.

I still hope to be heard by President of the United States Donald Trump and to achieve mercy and humanism towards Yaroshenko who is now an elderly and sick person.
