State Duma considered Commissioner’s opinion

17 February 2015

On 17 February, the State Duma admitted the draft law on amendments to the Water Code of Russia to be hazardous for ecology of waters and rejected it in the first reading.

Previously, on 22 December, Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia Ella Pamfilova sent an official letter to Chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly Sergey Naryshkin, which stated that she was utterly opposed to the elimination of bans to discharge wastes into rivers and other water bodies in the areas of drinking and domestic water supply protection. The Commissioner underlined that the current norms of the Water Code are aimed at preserving the health and life of people, and any infringement thereof might result in an ecologic disaster of national scale.
