Sentence brought into line with law

On 4 March, having considered an appeal from the Russian Human Rights Commissioner, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation changed its stance and reduced the service of term for the convicted Mr B.

Previously, the Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia sent a petition to the Supreme Court Presidium to bring the sentence of the convict in line with the effective legislation.

On December 2010, a regional court sentenced Mr B. to eight and a half years to life in a maximum security penal colony. Later on, his crime was re-qualified due to the amendments in the criminal law. However, the sentence term was not changed correspondingly. Mr B’s complaints to the Supreme Court had been dismissed and the sentence unchanged.
