On 19 May, Commissioner for Human Rights in Irkutsk Region Valeriy Lukin presented his report on indigenous peoples’ rights to the Committee for Social and Cultural Legislation of the Regional Legislative Assembly, the VSP.ru reports.
According to the commissioner, the indigenous minorities in Irkutsk Region include the Tofalar — 657 people, and the Evenk — 956. Lately the number of local residents has been reduced because of their migration to other regions of Russia.
Among some main problems faced by the indigenous minorities in Irkutsk Region there are lack of manufacturing jobs, permanent unemployment, and transport difficulties, since the northern territories of their residence are hard to reach.
Mr Lukin underlined the need to develop a special programme for support of the indigenous minorities in Irkutsk Region.
