Commissioner in Voronezh supported Media Rights Centre

Commissioner in Voronezh supported Media Rights Centre

On 24 April, Commissioner for Human Rights in Voronezh Region Tatiana Zrazhevskaya issued a letter of opinion against unfounded inclusion of the regional Media Rights Centre into the registry of foreign agents. The document was sent to Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Ella Pamfilova.

The Ministry of Justice considers quotes from public speeches by Galina Arapova, Director of the Center, to be one of the reasons why the non-commercial organisation has been included in the registry.

"I believe the statements of a citizen, including the director of the said organisation… do not evidence a political activity of the organisation, and therefore this fact is not sufficient to acknowledge the non-commercial organisation to be a foreign agent," Ms Zrazhevskaya noted in her letter.

For reference: the Media Rights Centre is a prominent organisation located in Voronezh and rendering legal assistance to journalists of various regions. By decision of Judge Tatiana Deyneka passed last week, the Centre will have to pay 300 thousand roubles for failure to register itself as a foreign agent. The Media Rights Centre will appeal to the district court against the decision of the magistrate’s court.
