Tatiana Moskalkova takes part in the Second Forum of the National Preventive Mechanism in Astana

On April 26, High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation Tatiana Moskalkova takes part in the Second Forum of the National Preventive Mechanism «Preventing torture through the joint efforts of national human rights institutions and the national preventive mechanism (NPM) by the invitation of Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Kazakhstan Askar Shakirov.

The aim of the event is to share knowledge and practical skills in monitoring places of detention and imprisonment and take stock of the work of the regional groups of the NPM in 2017.

The High Comissioner presented her work in the field of protecting the rights of convicts and defendants, gave examples of applications, told about her proposals to improve legislation on human rights and about interaction with civil society institutions.

The second forum of the National Preventive Mechanism is held in Astana on April 26–27.

Representatives of the regional NPM groups, members of the NPM Coordination Council, representatives of State bodies of Kazakhstan, Central Asian ombudsmen, members of the UN Subcommittee against Torture, representatives of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), representatives of the Asia-Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions, Delegations of the European Union, the Council of Europe, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), International Prison Reform (PRI) participate in the event.
