Statement by High Commissioner with regard to IPC decision

Statement by High Commissioner with regard to IPC decision

I welcomed the news that today our Paralympians were «returned the flag». The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) decided to conditionally lift the suspension of the Russian Paralympic Committee.

After being deprived of membership in the IPC, our athletes missed a lot of competitions, lost the opportunity to demonstrate the will and courage that is so important for sportspersons, and especially for people with disabilities. By their example, Paralympians give hope to tens of thousands of disabled people, and show the whole world that staying strong in spirit and not giving up under any circumstances, one can conquer any peaks and move towards the dream.

In my appeals to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the President of the European Ombudsman Institute, I noted that people who have to rise above themselves every day were infringed upon their rights with impunity, and called for protection of Russian Paralympians.

Now our athletes have the opportunity to participate in competitions under the colours of the Russian Federation and with the Russian anthem. I congratulate them and all citizens of our country on this victory.
