On 29 to 30 September, Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia Ella Pamfilova took part in the research and practice seminar The Role of National Human Rights Defending Organisations in Promoting Rights of Indigenous Minorities.
Ms Pamfilova underscored that for the Krasnoyarsk region the seminar’s subject was of special significance, “On the one hand wide experience has been gained in the region, while on the other hand all the problems to be solved in view of the contemporary challenges are clearly visible here.”
In the course of the seminar the participants discussed problems related to observance of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The problems included availability of national human rights organisations to the indigenous peoples, the peoples’ opportunity to cooperate with the international UN human rights authorities, and legal regulation in the enforcement and protection of indigenous minorities’ rights.
