On 29 October 2014, the day before the state Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repression, Commissioner for Human Rights in Russia Ella Pamfilova opened the annual ceremony called ‘The Return of the Names’.
The annual memorial action has been held in Moscow by the international civil rights organisation Memorial since 2006. For eight years in a row public figures, human rights defenders and other people have been gathering nearby the Solovetsky Stone in Moscow to read aloud, from 10 am to 10 pm, the names of those shot in the city during the Terror years.
“Only a name, age, occupation and the execution date. The regime longed for obliteration of the memory of those people. Our duty is to bring those names from the oblivion,” the organisers of the event explained.
